Male Fertility

male fertility
Infertility used to be considered a purely female issue. However over a third of fertility problems among couples are caused by male conditions. Whilst considerable efforts have been made within biomedicine to address the causes of female infertility, very little options are available to improve male fertility, other than providing ICSI as part of the IVF process.

Acupuncture offers a simple, non invasive method of improving sperm parameters on its own or in conjunction with assisted conception techniques. A number of research studies have concluded that acupuncture can improve sperm quality and motility and increase abnormally low or absent sperm count.

Men’s Preconception programme

Designed for men who have had a suboptimal sperm test, the men’s preconception programme uses evidence based treatment protocols to improve sperm parameters and nutritional and lifestyle advice shown to improve general health levels and fertility.

The programme consists of 10 treatments given over 5 or 10 weeks and is tailored according to whether sperm count, motility or morphology is affected.

As it takes three months for sperm to develop and mature it is recommended that the preconception programme is started 3 months prior to a planned conception or IVF programme. However if this is not possible the course may still have a beneficial effect upon sperm quality and abnormal forms when undertaken 6 weeks prior to IVF or ICSI.

Pre IVF/ICSI Sperm donation

Where there is no male factor infertility we recommend a session of acupuncture the day prior to sperm collection for an ART procedure can help to increase sperm motility, improve blood flow to the genital area and reduce anxiety.
