About Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a part of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a unique system of medicine which draws upon over 2,000 years of accumulated knowledge of treating human disease. According to TCM a person's health is determined by the quality of their vital energy or Qi which circulates around the body in channels or pathways. The flow of Qi can be disturbed by a number of factors such as emotional states, poor nutrition, infections and trauma. When Qi is imbalanced illness can result. Acupuncturists use needles inserted at points along the channels to stimulate the body's own healing response and restore its natural balance.
What happens when I come for treatment?
At your first consultation I will ask you some questions about your general health, medical history and lifestyle in order to make a TCM diagnosis of your particular patterns of disharmony and give you a short acupuncture session to see how you respond. The first consultation lasts approximately 1 hour, subsequent treatments 30-45 minutes.
What does it feel like?
Most people find acupuncture deeply relaxing. Acupuncture needles are very fine and consequently insertion is generally painless and experienced as a momentary tingling or aching sensation. The needles are left in place for 20 minutes whilst you relax.
How should I prepare for treatment?
It is best to wear loose comfortable clothing that allows easy access to lower legs and arms and tummy. It is always best to eat a light meal before coming for acupuncture and avoid being treated on an empty stomach. You may feel slightly tired after treatment and it is best not to do anything too strenuous for the next couple of hours. We also suggest that you avoid alcohol on the day of treatment.
Is it safe?
Acupuncture has a very sound track record and adverse effects are very rare. Acupuncture needles are sterile, single use.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends upon the nature and duration of your condition. Where the condition is recent sometimes only two or three treatments are required. Other longer standing conditions will require more. Some change is usually felt after five treatments.
